Gary Yong has a passion for site-specific projects. Notably with numerous stencil artworks displayed in designated public spaces (with consent). Recently he got into collaborative works with local and Wellington based artists, in an art trip to the city of Wellington for a group show called ‘All Together Now”. A documentary was made during the visit, including footage of site-specific stencil arts displayed around the city. Last month he completed a collaborative 2.5m x 12m mural as part of the Auckland’s Base FM “Shake and Bake’ outdoor event.
He has been consistently exhibiting artworks in group shows since 2000, with 17 exhibitions in total. Gary Yong's first solo show "Junglism" is in the making, and will be opening on
June 6th 2006, KUJA, Auckland.
The "Junglism" exhibition is inspired by the jungle books that Gary enjoyed as a child, exploring images of animals, plants and landscapes. The execution of the artworks is a fusion of painted acrylics and aersol stencils. The focus is on bold images, heavy outlines and layering techniques, presented on canvas, metal, wood and found objects.
Definitely check it out if you are in the area...
